Writing

Along with being out there as a songwriter since his first release with Slapout in 2005,
Hugh Foley has an extensive commercial, creative, historic, and scholarly writing
background.

Like many developing writers, his first focus was journalism in college, where he was
the editor of the student newspaper, The Open Door, at DeKalb College in Clarkston,
Georgia while also working for NBC News in Atlanta. While at New York University, he
focused on creative writing, especially poetry, and won the Raymond Ford Poetry Prize
presented by Avon Books in 1987. While at NYU, he also served as the poetry editor of
the student literary journal, The Minetta Review, and later as the poetry editor for
Cooweescoowee, the journal of arts and letters at Rogers State University in
Claremore, OK.

After moving to Stillwater, Oklahoma in 1993 to work on his Ph.D., Foley began writing
more scholarly work, contributing to multiple encyclopedias, journals, books of essays,
and, finally, his own books, Oklahoma Music Guide and Oklahoma Route 66 Music
Guide. Oklahoma Music Guide is considered the go-to source for information about
Oklahoma’s music history and has been quoted many times in local and national media.
Most recently, he wrote historical markers for the Merle Haggard Statue in Muskogee,
Oklahoma and for the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame to commemorate the song, “Okie
from Muskogee.” He also wrote and assembled text for markers of significant musical
figures for the Stillwater Music Walk of Fame at Block 34 in Stillwater.
He continues working on the revision and update of the next edition of Oklahoma Music Guide.
